Here’s a hint: We’re not all going to be happy with something we do. The easiest way to tell if its sneaky is to ask yourself “what could be happening behind this link?”.
We know we’re going to get asked about sneaky links a lot, and we have some good tips for what to do when they come up.
1. Think about the link from your perspective. If it’s a small, quick, and easy backlink, then it’s probably not sneaky. If it’s a larger and complicated link, then it’s probably not sneaky.
Its a little more difficult to look at when we have time. We don’t want to break the link, but we also don’t want to create a link that is not very helpful. That means we should try to find linkable content out of the link. If we can, we should link to it. If we cant, we should create new content to link to.
The way to make sure we can do this in the least sneaky way possible is to try to get as much out of the link as possible. To get the most value out of your link, you need a link that is valuable to yourself, at least. One way to do this is to try to create a link that only people who are familiar with the content of the page are going to click on.
As you can imagine the most common way to start developing a link profile is to find a link that is so valuable that it can’t possibly go anywhere else. The way I do this is to create a link that has no relationship to the page it’s on. I then create new content to link to the page, and then add that link to my link profile.
This is an excellent way to build a link profile.

If you do this, then you have created a link profile. Which is not bad, except for the part where you made it so that you can’t link to it. It sounds pretty obvious, but it’s not: In order to link to a page, you need a page. You can’t link to a page unless you have a page.
So if you’re creating a link profile, it’s time to make it look like you have a page. In this case, you can do this by creating a link that is no relationship to the page its on.
