I’m sure there’s a certain amount of research and thinking that goes into crafting a great longform essay, but I’d argue that it’s not the content of the essay that matters, but rather the process of writing it.
If you’re anything like me, you probably spent hours (or days) writing your longform essay. The best way to show off your writing skills is to write actual text and then share it with people. The better your writing is, the more likely you will be to get asked for that first draft. Writing great essays is actually a lot like writing great poems. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s a lot of fun.
If this is true, then maybe one day I will finally have a master’s degree and be a published poet. That will be a huge achievement in and of itself, but I could also see myself doing that same thing with essays. And that could be a big part of why I write in the first place.
The only thing that makes reading longform texts easier is that they are a lot more readable. There is a lot of material to sort through, but when you’re reading a long piece, your brain gets to work. You’re not just thinking about all the words that you’re spelling out, and you’re not just thinking about how you’re going to summarize the entire piece.
Reading long essays is something that I have a lot of trouble with. Reading essays can be fun, especially if theyre a bit longer, but in my defense, I tend to be a bit less organized than I would like. When I read essays, I tend to go through the material bit by bit, trying to figure out what to write about next and how much to pay attention to each part of the essay.
Youll find no problem with understanding the structure of the essay. Like most essays, it will be clear to you where the writing is going. But once you’re there, it’s quite likely that you will start skipping, or at least not paying attention, to the parts of the essay that look like you’re skipping. At that point you’re already working on something else, and it’s best to stop and do it.
The best thing to do now is get your head in the game. When youre not busy on your essay, you can go read something longer. If you have a long list you can take on a trip to the library and peruse the books in the collection. You can also take some time to start reading a book, whether you want to read the book or not. It will take away from your study and make you a better reader.
The relationship between reading and the development of certain skills is a common one. Just reading a book, whether you read for pleasure or for academic purposes, can leave your brain more primed for learning. If you read for pleasure, you can be more likely to understand the information you read faster, and you can also have a much higher level of comprehension. If you read to develop a skill, you can be more likely to learn the skills you read more quickly.
Learning certain skills is a part of learning how to read, and there is a big difference between developing certain skills and developing your ability to read. The latter is the more important skill, and the better you are at it, the more likely you are to apply it to other areas of your life. It’s the same with reading longform texts. Short texts with lots of detail can be difficult, but if you can make your comprehension skills more efficient, you’ll benefit by reading longer texts.
Reading longform texts, like novels, tends to be more difficult than reading just random text because the words are so detailed. However, what is the most important part of reading longform texts? The ability to make a mental connection between words and meaning. The ability to make a mental connection between words and meaning is what enables us to read a longform text.
