I’m sure this article will be popular with plant lovers. The article discusses the many different ways plants eat, and their different means of doing it. It is basically an incredible look at how the plant cell is able to actually respire and use all of its energy. In the article, I read about how plants have evolved to work in all sorts of different ways, and that’s all thanks to photosynthesis.
While this is really, really cool, I think it’s a little bit too extreme to explain what photosynthesis actually is. Photosynthesis is simply a way of getting energy by burning up plant matter. Plants are not just consuming oxygen in the air to make energy, they are also releasing a gas that they have to breathe, oxygen. If you can get carbon out of the air (meaning you can get oxygen into the air), you can then get energy from the carbon.
In the real world the process of photosynthesis is pretty simple. The plants are taking the carbon dioxide from the air or the oxygen out of the water in the air. They are then lighting up with some energy to get that carbon dioxide and oxygen into the air. However, plants cannot do this all on their own. They have to get energy from something else, which is cellular respiration.
Respiration is a process that occurs inside living cells. It’s a process that takes energy from the carbon dioxide produced by photosynthesis (which occurs in plant cells) and converts that energy into simple chemical energy. One molecule of energy is converted into one mole of chemical energy, which is a mole for a lot of chemical energy. So basically, your cells are eating energy and converting it into chemical energy, which is then converted into oxygen for your lungs.
This process has a direct impact on your cells, and it creates a great deal of waste carbon dioxide, which is what makes the atmosphere so bad for us.
