I know I know the title of this article is a bit controversial, but I found it a very interesting read. I found myself reading about the “Psychiatry Without a Referral” concept because I was a little skeptical of the idea. Sure, it sounds nice, but I didn’t want to just go for it and it was the first time I had heard of a program like this.
Its a program for people who cannot or do not wish to receive a referral to a psychiatrist. Basically you take the information you have about a person and send it to the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist has no idea that you know the person, and you have no idea if the information you send is true or not. I was pretty impressed with how it worked. You can think of the program a bit like a lottery.
I did not know the program could be this much fun. I had to check out the website as well. The website is actually pretty interesting. You have to register and you have to fill out a form and the form says that if you do, you get a referral to a psychiatrist. It also says, “If you do not want a referral, you can simply leave us a message” which is pretty good. I liked that, it made it seem like its really not a scam.
As opposed to the other programs out there, this is much more than a referral. There is a fee to join, but the reason I chose it was because I’d rather pay it than not have a psychiatrist. I’ve used it before and so far it’s been a very positive experience and I’ve gotten a referral to a psychiatrist and I’m going to keep using it.
I also think that there are other ways I could be referred to a psychiatrist that I don’t know about. I could be referred by a friend, a coworker, someone from a program I watch on TV, or someone I know. The point is, you can find a mental health professional of whatever kind you prefer to be referred to without a referral. Just tell them what you think you need and they will do the rest. Also, the referral fee is totally optional.
How much does it cost to do a referral? The fee is only $10.
10 bucks is a steal. In fact, it’s really really cheap. So if it were me, I would be all over it.
